DT: May 2, 1998 1. House Attack on Affirmative Action 2. Cyber March to Protect Free Speech on the Internet 3. Glasser v. Gingrich: The Debate on Separation of Church and State Greetings ... ... and thank you for sending so many messages welcoming me as the ACLU's new CyberOrganizer. Congress will be taking up a number of our key issues over the next few months, and I'm looking forward to working with you -- our key cyber activists -- to take our on-line organizing activities to a new level. Coming up in the two weeks:

1. The introduction of an amendment to ban affirmative action in higher education admissions has been delayed until next week. Representative Frank Riggs (R-CA) will offer the amendment, deceptively named the "Anti-Discrimination in College Admissions Act of 1998," when the Higher Education Authorization Act (HR 6) reaches the floor. The Riggs amendment would prohibit all public colleges and universities that receive federal funds, including Pell Grants, from using affirmative action in college admissions. A fact sheet on the impact of the Riggs amendment can be found at:  http://www.aclu.org/congress/affaxedu.html

ACTION NEEDED: Send a free fax using the Act Now! link found on the web site at the end of the Riggs Amendment talking points at http://www.aclu.org/action/riggshr6.html or call your Representative at (202) 225-3121, urging him or her to vote against the Riggs amendment to HR 6. 2.

Senator John McCain's (R-AZ) "Internet School Filtering Act," (S. 1619), which would require that all public libraries and schools that receive federal funds for Internet access use blocking software to restrict Internet access, is scheduled for a vote during the week of May 11. We are planning a "Speak Out Against Censorware" CyberMarch on Monday, May 11, and are asking free speech advocates from across the country to help us flood the congressional e-mail servers with letters against mandating the use of clumsy, arbitrary filtering programs in schools and public libraries. More information about the "Speak Out" Cyber March and the issue will be posted on Wednesday, May 6, at: http://www.aclu.org/congress/congress.html and on America Online (keyword: ACLU).

ACTION NEEDED: Make a pledge to send an e-mail letter to your Senators and Representative during the "Speak Out Against Censorware" CyberMarch on Monday, May 11, and to refer ten other advocates to the CyberMarch website or AOL forum. (Remember, info on the Cyber March at these sites will not be active until May 6.). 3.

The growing debate between ACLU Executive Director Ira Glasser and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich over the Founding Fathers' interpretation of the separation of church and state has made it to the Internet. Intellectual Capital.com -- http://www.intellectualcapital.com -- is conducting an on-line poll of which view the public supports - Newt's or Ira's. (As of today, 49 percent of the respondents favor Newt's position; 45 percent support Ira's.) In addition to the poll, the Intellectual Capital website also features dueling articles from Ira Glasser and Rep. Gingrich; a collection of material about the Gingrich challenge can also be found on the ACLU website at http://www.aclu.org/news/f050198a.html. Support the ACLU's view and cast your vote in the IC.com poll!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------
